As Paige said Stars are mostly made of hydrogen and helium and burn by forcing the nuclei of these gases together. A hydrogen nucleus is made of a proton, when you force this too join another proton and some neuters you get He and a huge amount of energy. Some stars can contain other elements from fusing He atoms and so on. When a star dies it sometimes explodes and throws the elements out into space, these can then recombine to form other stars and planets. In fact we are all made of bits of stars!
