I don’t think banana’s are toxic to cats, I just texted my mate Tony, who’s a vet and he said that bananas aren’t really toxic to cats, but they are carnivores and they need protein more than bananas.
Banana’s aren’t toxic to cats because there are no chemicals in the banana that would bind up any proteins that cause a death signal, they don’t have any toxins in that would stop cellular respiration or prevent muscle from doing its job. It contains no neurotoxins that would prevent any normal brain activity from occuring, nor do they have a physical texture or any swelling properties that would damage the cat’s gut.
The only way I guess they could be toxic would be if the cat mounted an immune response to a chemical in bananas. This would be really rare, and would mean that the cat had manufactured antibodies (little recognition proteins) that could bind up the banana chemicals and signal to the cats white blood cells to get busy and start causing an inflammation!! This is what happens to me when I eat cheese. Not pleasant.
Although they are toxic to me! I can’t eat bananas because I am allergic to them! If I eat them my throat could swell up until I can’t breathe…. Pretty bad!
AN update from talking with Tony the Vet – he said he’s never heard of a reported case of toxicity, however the banana’s are high in potassium, so if a cat at a lot of them, in theory the cat’s electrolyte balance could be knocked out of whack and it would get ill!
