I don’t. Some of the culture mediums contain products derived from animals (for example blood), but we don’t use any actual animals.

I’m in he same situation as Gemma. I use animal products, however the only tissue I use direct from the animal is human skin, but we have to get the patients consent and generally use the bit that gets left over from a circumcision!

I don’t use animals in my research but at the moment I can’t see any real alternative for some of the tests that have to be carried out to improve medicine, both for humans and animals. I’m actually a vegetarian and I don’t agree with animal models in cosmetic testing since there are already plenty of cosmetic products that we know are safe so can we really justify animal suffering just for our own vanity?

I don’t technically use animals in my research now, although my previous research in nanotechnology for drug delivery used mice and rabbits to see if our drug-carrier nanoparticles worked well in mammals. These tests have to be done before nanoparticles or other drugs can be used in humans.

Now I just photograph animals to show people how they live in their natural environments, and to communicate the importance of preserving natural environments for the animals that make up our ecosystems!
