      Yes we do. We use lots of different types. Some are liquid, but the ones we use most are solid. These are agar plates.

      Some of them allow most bacteria to grow, but others contain substances to select for certain bacteria. For example, they may contain antibiotics which stop some bacteria growing. We also use some which have indicator chemicals in, these make the bacteria grow certain colours which helps us to identify them.
