Question: Do you think that teaching young children that evolution is incorrect and creationism is correct is wrong? Do you think all children should be taught scientific theories?
I don’t think that parents or churches teaching children creationism is wrong, but I do think that in the science classroom, teachers should discuss theories that have a scientific basis, and not their own opinions or non-science. In science class you should learn the science!!! The science very definitely says that evolution has occurred throughout history and is still occurring. I think that we should take caution to teach children about their philosophy and religion, which should come from other sources other than their science teachers.
Teaching scientific theories, to me, is an important part of anyones education as it gives you the opportunity to ask questions about the nature of things around you (if it’s taught well!!). Teaching someone a theory is wrong seems contradictory – it’s a theory – no-one ever said it was 100% right!!
My opinion would be that Creationism has it’s place in RE lessons alongside a well rounded discussion the core concepts of all faiths. It’s up to the respective churches how they wish to conduct the religious education of young people within their congregations, however to me the teaching of a literal interpretation of Genesis as ‘the way it all began’ has no place in the mainstream, multicultural schools of the UK.
