I don’t think anyone really truely knows – it’s hard to get one theory to describe and fit all the observations that have been made about gravity!

At the bottom of it all, there is the observation that anything that has a mass (like planet, person, spoon…anything) has that capacity to warp space around it. bigger masses have more warping capacity. Since all objects exist within a given space, when they come close enough together they can have an effect on each other and move together.

It’s all incredibly interesting – theres a great podcast here if you’d like to listen

What do you think happens to magnets in zero gravity?

Now that is a good question!

I think that scientists are actually still puzzled about this particular force! I know that gravity happens between objects that have MASS… and the force of gravity depends on the masses of the objects it is acting on and between.

Physics was never my strongest science subject, but I’d have to agree with SarahJayne. I don’t think anyone really knows the answer. I think scientists agree gravity exists, but there are many theories surrounding the hows and whys of it.

Gravity is the force which is caused by the bending of space due to objects with mass. any time you have to change direction you cause an acceleration. Accelerations and forces are linked. So because a mass causes a bend in space that bend must produce a force on a object moving through that part of space.
