If you really want to get in to it, the best thing to do is get a tour around a local microbiology department (at a local hospital) or even work experience there if they offer it. The NHS careers website and IBMS (institute for biomedical scientists) also offer useful advice.
We use special culture media called agar (it’s made from seaweed) which provides the bacteria with everything they need to grow. Just like animals, they each need different nutrients and different conditions.
