I think I would give all high schools equipment to do some really awesome science, like microscopes and lab equipment. All students could really help science to move along, and young students like you often have the best and most creative science ideas! I want to use the money from this competition to start and produce movies for students to better enjoy and understand science.
I would build something called a tip enhanced microscope. This microscope will allow you to tickle single molecules and see if they change colour. We have something like that now, but with one million pounds we could make it awesome.
With £1M, I would coordinate a big clinical study of melanoma patients, looking to see if there were any links between the way the mitochondria (the cell’s batteries) turn over in their cancerous cells and the type of skin cancer they have. If there was a common mechanism of damage between the cancers we could use that as a starting point to look for a treatment or cure.
